The peninsula Lignano Sabbiadoro is located exactly halfway between Venice and Trieste and it is easily reachable by a highway connected to the European motorway system.
It has enjoyed 40 years of rapid but controlled development and from the early sixties onwards it is among the very first ranks of Italian and international seaside resorts.
Over eight kilometres of fine sandy beach separate the sea from a green pine grove still covering most part of the area in which urban development was integrated without changing the natural characteristics of this beautiful territory. The warm and safe sea, often awarded the ‘Blue Flag’, because of its water quality, with its shallow bottom and without perils is suitable for children and non swimmers. The peninsula is divided into three parts: Lignano Sabbiadoro, the lively and modern city centre with the most important administration offices and some of the best shops and of course hotels, holiday houses and flats, campsites, sports facilities, night spots and yacht harbours. Lignano Pineta with its unique spiral street plan where houses and hotels are partly hidden by pine woods in a landscape of gentle dunes: an elegant and quiet area recently enriched by a four hectare park dedicated to Ernest Hemingway with over 4.000 plants. Lignano Riviera in the midst of pine woods offers in addition to a vacataion of relax facilities such as the thermal bath and the bautiful zoo ‘Punta Verde’ with 2.000 animals. Motorboats and sailingboats play an important role for Lignano:
there are numerous yacht harbours with over 5.000 berths; because of its geographical location Lignano becomes a natural ‘terminal’ for boat excursions along the Slovenian, Croatian and the Adriatic coasts and of course through the lagoon which is behind Lignano. The Lagoon of Marano encloses a W.W.F. bird sanctuary at the estuary of the River Stella. Surrounded by a lush vegetation of terrestrial and aquatic plants the landscape is the ideal habitat for a lot of bird species to settle there forever or to stop over on their long migrations.
Sports and leisure activities are very important in Lignano Sabbiadoro: there are modern sports facilities and popular night spots, numerous amusement parks like Strabilia, Gulliverlandia with its Aquarium, Parco Junior (for kids under 14), I Gommosi and Aquasplash, a water-games amusement park for the whole family. A lot of the events take place in the Summer Arena Alpe Adria, with its 2.800 seats and surrounded by beautiful green parks it invites every summer hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over Europe.
